Tomas Maestre marina  Cabo de Palos  Cartagena  Santiago de la Ribera  Murcia  La Union Calblanque  Portman Guns  San Pedro Salt Flats

The Tomas Maestre marina is a lovely place to take a stroll and stop at one of the cafes, bars or restaurants for a snack whilst you take in the view. From the marina you can take the foot ferry to Santiago de la Ribera or take a boat trip into the Med. From here you can also book a trip on a speedboat, hire jet-skis, charter a boat or take a diving trip.

There are small shopping centres along the length of La Manga strip where you will find shops, cafes and restaurants.
At the start of the strip is Cabo de Palos, a popular area for diving. You can take a stroll around the working marina and along the promenade up to the lighthouse. The Sunday market offers a great variety of goods for sale, from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes, shoes, hand-crafted goods and gifts. The market receives visitors from many of the surrounding areas, who then drift down to the harbour to take a snack, stay for lunch or just stroll along the quayside.
At the end of the strip, called  Veneziola, you will find salt flats, this is a popular area for bird watching.
All around the Mar Menor picturesque towns such as Los Belones, Los Alcázares and Santiago de la Ribera, with seafront promenades bordered by majestic palm trees, are great for a day trip. Each day of the week, a local street market is hosted in a different town. Santiago de la Ribera  and Los Alcazares can be reached by tourist boats, and other towns by the local bus service.

Cartagena is well worth a visit to see the Roman monuments and for shopping.  There are excellent guided walking tours of the city. Cartagena is one of the oldest cities in Spain and is a cultural and historical gem.

You can take a trip on the tourist bus or take the tourist boat and sail around the harbour. Visit the museums or the roman amphitheatre or discover the city from a bird’s eye view via the panoramic lift which takes you to the Torres park (with resident peacocks).  Why not try something different and take a segway tour of the city.

There is also a large shopping mall on the outskirts of Cartagena.

In Murcia you will find many historic attractions as well as great shopping in the narrow alleyways of the old centre. Murcia has many interesting places to visit including the Gothic Cathedral (14th and 15th centuries), the Bishops Palace (18th century), the Plaza de Santo Domingo, the recently renovated Casino (1847), La Fuensanta Sanctuary and the Los Jeronimos monastery. You will find a variety of attractions in my user guide including a walking tour of the old city walls.

There is a combined zoo and water park near Murcia and tours are available around the university aquarium.

Calblanque is one area of the Murcian coast that still preserves its natural riches. You will find long golden beaches with arid hills, fossil dunes and an intensely blue sea. Calblanque has been a regional park since 1987. Access from the La Manga highway runs up to the discovery centre where maps are available showing recommended walking tours of one of the few remaining areas as yet untouched by man on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. There are some lovely scenic costal walks around Calblanque.

The area around Portman near to La Manga club is very scenic and a walk up to the Portman Guns will provide a beautiful view of the coastline and views across to La Manga strip.

The foot ferry provides a regular service from the marina across the Mar Menor to the town of Santiago de la Ribera. The trip across the lake is very pleasant and takes half an hour, it costs about 4 euros. A market is held on Wednesdays and the Spanish air display team practices here, so you will often see an impressive air display.

There are excellent sandy beaches at Santiago and some interesting shops. It is relaxing to sit at one of the cafes on the front just watching the world go by or to have lunch in one of the fish restaurants on the beach.

Visit La Union and tour the Sierra Minera(Mining Hills) dressed in yellow and green ochres under the silhouettes of the old wheelhouses. In the 19th century with the mining euphoria, the region lived an authentic gold fever. It was called the New California, such was the speed at which fortunes were won and lost. The promise of easy money brought everyone to these hills. Today this scenic area is dotted with old abandoned wheelhouses which add an air of mystery to the region.

There are some interesting buildings in La Union  and a market is held there on Tuesdays.

Salinas de Marchamalo

The Salt Flats of San Pedro Del Pinatar form the most important wetlands in the region. This regional park is home to many migratory birds including flamingos. Morphological formations such as salt flats, salt marshes, reed beds, beaches and dunes can be seen in this park. More info.

In the old part of Mazarron town you can find various historical and artistic interests, next to Veles Castle (Mazarron Castle) is the religious architecture of the San Antonio de Padua, and the San Andres churches. The historical heart of the town is the town hall and the beautiful casino. The bay hides many treasures, with an underwater garden of important sea fauna.

The erosions at the neaby town of  Bolnuevo are almost magical, wind and water erosion has created an ever-changing rock formation.

Details of all these places to visit are provided in the apartment's comprehensive guest manual.
